If you have been reading a book that advises against traveling Thailand from May - December because of the monsoon - Throw it away and come and grab some low-cost bargins.
It is true that more rain occurs during these months, but it is a very gradual build up in weather. May and April are set to be gorgeous this year. What you may find are slightly more showers between 6pm and 8pm. It really is like that in Thailand, as opposed to most western countries. It rains, you sit down with your friends for an hour or so, it stops, you carry on. On the plus side the rain brings a welcome cooling of the air. At the time of writing (April '08) it is unbearably hot during the day, especially if it has not rained for a couple of days. With the rain everything gets greener and fresher. The landscape is rejuvenated and you appreciate how lush the surrounding forests are.
As there are less people, you will find walking the streets of Ao Nang easier, or even getting a 'tuk-tuk' will be a synch. The Southern part of Thailand has a certain charm about it, and in the low season it shines through a lot more. The locals are much more relaxed, and nothing seems as urgent. Prices for everything from food & drink to souvenirs are reduced.
